In the beginning The Powers That Be created all males and females. After some time, the Powers realized their creatures where somewhat feeble and replacing them simply took time away from other activities. To this effect, they held a big meeting to address the issue. At this gathering, the wisest and oldest Power suggested they turn over the replacement of the species to the creatures. The idea sent shivers down through the deepest core of all the planets and caused rumbles all throughout the universe. The Powers where appalled. The act of creation had always been handled by them. They felt wise, and had created a myriad of things. They had experience! Handing down the power of creation to the creatures seemed blasphemous. But the oldest and wisest persisted -
“We would be free from the task of overseeing the status of our flocks. We could place an encoding in their genes to ensure they yearn to reproduce. Besides, we have been discussing options to enhance their experience of life itself. What better gift than to let them create themselves freely. Once they have experienced the power of creation at that level, who knows how far they could evolve on their own. It would be like winding up a sail boat and setting it free to see where it goes. Many an answer regarding evolution might spontaneously appear.”
“But this could also lead them away from our guidance and support! Lead them to believe they need us no longer!” objected one.
“That is a lesson they may be ready to learn. How else will we teach them they need us if they never stray from our path? If always under the shade, how will you know what the heat of the sun will do?”
The points were well taken. The matter of enriching the creature’s lives had taken many an hour of pondering and brain storming with little return. By allowing only The Powers to create new things they were setting limits on their creatures, rather than allowing them to experience for themselves. The Powers agreed then to hand down the power of creation.
Immediately problems arose. Who would be mainly responsible for carrying through with the difficult and time consuming task of making a new male or female? “Why don’t we let them decide who will have that power?” One suggested. The option was presented to both males and females in a huge gathering. The idea caused wide spread excitement and commotion. The Powers That Be realized they had finally really stirred their flocks into a truly new experience. Suddenly the question was raised, who would have such power? “Well, we thought you might figure that out amongst yourselves.” Immediately arguments and aggression rose to a crescendo as the flock disputed amongst themselves. No agreement could be reached and the first rock flew across the field starting a battle that would last. Females and males alike wanted the power and they would fight each other bitterly and ruthlessly for the privilege.
The Powers That Be were quite taken aback by the response of their flock, but in a way they understood. This would be the first time a power would be handed down to a lower life form. Powers were coveted even among themselves. It was clear the flock would have to work this one out by themselves.
Decade after decade passed, males and females continued to fight. Much blood had been shed, and no progress achieved; both sides where competent warriors and stratagems. Both sides where after all, creations of The Powers That Be. Finally, one day the lead female called for a flock wide meeting, females from all reaches of the earth came called forth by their sisters. “This war has gone on far too long,” she began. The crowds nodded in agreement. “The blood stains our rivers. The pain darkens our days. This isn’t an experience I want to continue having. My body is tired, my limbs week from pain. I could continue fighting only to find my end in some abyss from the land I love, instead of sitting at the top of the mountain enjoying the setting sun. Sisters, I move for us to surrender and let the males have the power of creation.” The silence permeated the air. It was a great sacrifice. The first power ever handed down, simply just handed over… Yet, it was also clear the forces of each side were parallel and matched word for word, fist for fist, and sword for sword for decades now. No one camp had an edge over the other. No side as far as they could remember had ever even inched a lead ahead. One lonely thump interrupted the still silence as a woman allowed her spear to hit the ground. She stood tall amidst the crowds with her hands free of weapons. One by one, each female followed her example until the land was littered with arms. The lead woman smiled with glory and relief, and called for a celebration, an end to the war! The weapons were piled high and set ablaze, and a feast of food and plenty ensued. The lead woman summoned two white doves and bid them to take the message of surrender, one to the men, and the other to the Powers That Be.
When the message arrived at the heavens, The Powers gathered in an excited rush. A surrender was a surprise outcome, an example of spontaneous creation. The first verification of their initial postulation that evolution might simply suggest itself! The assembly finally came to a restless quiet.
“The women have surrendered,” the oldest and wisest began. “They have sent this white dove with the message.”
“What will we do now?” Interrupted a younger power.
“It is clear the flocks are ready for the power. They have fought for it long and hard. It is also clear the wiser of the two have been the females, for they have stopped to ponder on the price they have paid for this power, and are willing to give it away. These are clearly the traits we want for the caretakers of the first power to be handed down.”
“But the men, they will be upset! By all accounts they have won!” Protested another.
“A victory by default is not a victory. The ones that have stepped up to the plate and taken responsibility are the women. Don’t we want the creation of our flocks to be in the hands of the responsible ones? Besides a creature displaying the ability to do what ever it takes to reach the highest good is the one that will stick around to ascertain the adequate unfolding of their creation!” The palpable silence spoke of agreement. Again, the oldest and wisest had a point.
A meeting was called and a great hall prepared for the handing down of the power of creation. All males and females came to witness the event. The Powers That Be stood in a long row at the front of the Assembly dressed in their ceremonial robes. Some females where upset and discontent. A sense of defeat permeated their attitude. Yet they had all agreed, and as sisters they would stand together.
The oldest and wisest stepped forth and called for the lead female and male. Just preliminary gestures the males thought. After all, the females gave it away. Their surrender proved they were the weaker of the two, and the least able to handle the first power handed down.
“The assembly of Powers is pleased to present the power of creation to the flock,” said the oldest and wisest. A small vase containing an intense white light was brought to the forefront. Gasps and awe from the audience filled the air. “The assembly has decided after much consideration, the power of creation belongs to the creature who has freed their hands of weapons. This tells us they have free hands to carry the fruit of their creation.” A rumble of surprise and incredulity vibrated through the space. The lead female looked around in disbelief. The oldest and wisest approached her, and gently embedded the vase in her belly.
The roar of protest shook the earth. The males, up in arms, felt cheated and deceived. The lead male stormed off the forum and summoned his brothers out of the place. Females! Not only where they weak, but underhanded; they were never to be trusted, and wholly avoided at al times. This treachery would not go un-revenged.
Time passed, and while some of the females where busy learning how to handle their new power and reaching competent skills at managing new creations, others spent time guarding from male scrimmages and attacks. There was never a serious all out war, but the women could never let their guard down.
The oldest and wisest was surprised when the lead female requested an audience.
“What is it my child?”
“Oh great one, this power you have given us has created great strife and sadness. It is nothing like when you have created in the past. Our lands might have just as well stayed at war. The peace we sought when we surrendered has been elusive. Our sacrifice has been worthless. We understand your choice and respect your decisions. But none of this is what we expected, or wanted. I am not certain this power is worth all this discord and struggle.”
The oldest and wisest listened carefully. So far, they had never quite succeeded at setting a fire under their flocks. Not until this power issue. Indeed answers to the evolutionary process where popping unexpectedly. The oldest and wisest was riveted, satisfied with the flock’s wrestling with new ideas and concepts, new feelings and experiences. Taking the power back was the last thing to do. There was no doubt about that.
“What do you suggest we do?” The oldest and wisest asked.
“Well, I have given this much consideration. Can’t we share the power with the males?”
“No. Not really. Creation must be allowed to rest in one place. It must know its origin with clarity, certainty. The source is always one. There has never been more than one source.” The female pondered quietly.
“Perhaps we could give the males a part in it. Like the coal that lights the first log of our night’s fire, or the first ray of light to break the grip of darkness at dawn.” The oldest and wisest was taken aback. Where did such wisdom and forethought spring from? Indeed source was deep and mysterious. Yes. The process of creation could be divided in a few places, especially at the beginning. It could be made to take two halves to make a whole with ease. Perhaps some thought needed to be expended on the details. But the idea had great merit.
“Share the creation process? What kind of suggestion is that! You know it comes from only the source, how could it be spliced into pieces!” Grumbled a Power.
“Like two halves making a whole, that’s how! Now go and figure out how we can do that,” commanded the oldest and wisest.
Some time passed when a brilliant idea came forth.
“Well, the genetic material consists of 12 sets of chromosomes. We can divide it in half. Give 6 to the females and 6 to the males. The only way they can create is if they each give their part.”
“Fantastic!” Exclaimed the oldest and wisest. “I knew you would not let me down.”
“There is one problem, however…”
“What could that possibly be?”
“Well, the opportunity for combinations will now grow exponentially. This could result in a myriad of modifications and… well, changes could show up in our flocks, that we haven’t experienced before.”
“Modifications? What kind of modifications?”
“Well, for example… color, height, build, maybe even tendencies to frailties or strengths. Things like prowess and mastery. Preferences for climates and foods, even perceptions of right and wrong… It could be unlimited.” Ah! Evolution! The oldest and wisest had to take a seat. Never in their wildest dreams had this ever occurred to them! How long and hard had they pondered on change, motivation, modification or shift? How many an hour had been spent attempting to introduce these concepts to the world! And all they had to do was unleash one single power.
“This could be dangerous,” the presenting Power continued. “The implications frankly scare me. Our flocks are even tempered, somewhat predictable, reliable. They share the same perception of reality, and right and wrong. We know from our studies this has been a crucial element in establishing harmony between them. If suddenly what’s right for one is wrong for the other who knows where we will all end! They fought over the creation power for decades! How long will they fight over who’s perception of right is right!?” The oldest and wisest smiled with satisfaction, strolling to the edge of heaven, the Power stopped to gaze down upon the earth. Fond memories came of the white dove fluttering with the first surrender message.
“Proceed with the implementation,” the oldest and wisest said with finality. The Powers present in the room took a deep breath. The silence sliced the air with expectation.
“Are you absolutely certain?” Asked the presenting Power.
“But we… we,”
“We what?” Interrupted the oldest and wisest.
“We don’t know how long this could take!”
“You mean the implementation?”
“No, no. The implementation is just a matter of setting a few things in the correct order. What I am concerned about is the issue of right and wrong! We don't know how long our flocks might fight each other before they realize there is no right or wrong, and that it is all a matter of self perception.” The oldest and wisest took a good long look at the presenting Power.
“Do you have plans to go somewhere…?”
