Stop Praying for peace... How on earth dare I say such a thing? Stop praying for peace?! Have I gone mad? I have been observing that little has been accomplished by all these thousands of years of praying for peace. In addition, for me there is a problem with the word “peace.” Peace just means too many different things. With 6 billion+ people on the planet, it isn’t farfetched to say we are asking the higher power for 5 billion different manifestations of peace. (I say 5 billion, to accommodate those that don't pray!)
Peace just has too many possible manifestations. What peace means to a 5 year old child in Cambodia isn’t the same as a 5 year old in France. What peace means to a man of 50 in the Himalayas could not possibly be the same as a man in Mexico City. What peace means to two 20 year olds in the same area might not mean the same thing if one lives in Park Avenue, and the other just 20 miles away in the Bronx.
It is my contention to get prayer effectively answered, we need to be asking for a common, clear result. You might think, well when I pray for peace, I’m clear I am asking for an end to all war. Do you mean a war of bullets? Or perhaps it is a war for space? How about a war of ideas? Maybe you mean an end to the war on drugs, or terrorism. Yes, those last ones have bullets involved, but that is not all there is to it. Drugs bring peace to the people who use them, and the ones waging terror stuff also feel at peace when they succeed… however fleeting that moment might be.
I do have a suggestion and a request. How about if we started praying for consciousness? You see, consciousness just really means one thing: to increase one's awareness and understanding. Synonyms to conscious are: aware, mindful, cognizant, awake, alert, deliberate, intentional, on purpose, determined. Dr. David Hawkins says… “Consciousness is much like a light bulb that goes on with electricity (truth) and fails to light if there is no electricity (falsehood).” When we pray for consciousness we are asking for truth to be evident, for falsehood to be clear. (You do want to know when someone is lying, don’t you?)
Consciousness opens our eyes, makes us aware of our potential. When we pray for consciousness, we are asking for growth in emotional, spiritual and mental maturity. Maturity makes responsible, altruistic choices easy; Choices that stop wars, abuse, corruption, and lies simply because it is the best thing to do for everyone.
Consciousness not only invites and moves us to create a magnificent world, but it equips us with inspiration and creativity. Consciousness raises the playing field from survival, struggle and strife to the potential of unlimited possibilities. Somehow it teaches us to see not only ourselves, but how our thoughts affect everything, from the people around us to life at large. It encourages us to make decisions that include the benefit of all. Consciousness includes you in absolute totality. It does not let you lie to yourself, or sneak in a dishonorable act just because you can. Consciousness places you on moral grounds, actually in moral clouds (that’s because it is higher!) to where you cannot hurt, abuse or lie because you KNOW you are doing that and you KNOW that isn’t the best choice.
There is a song used in services: “let there be peace on earth, and let it start with me…”
Consciousness lets you BE peace, because you know you have made the best choice for you, everyone and everything.
