I just got over a pretty nasty flue. OMG! It is terrible to be so sick. I did learn an interesting thing about me. With this particular flue I had a cough that lingered for about 4 weeks. As I was recuperating I would notice there were times when I would cough more than others. One day a dear friend called me and asked me to take him to urgent care. It was late in the evening and I was not yet 100% well. I told him I would be on my way. As soon as I got in the car and all the way to his home I coughed intensely. I really noticed that. Was it stress that was making me cough SO much more? He was in a bad way and we decided it was better for him to ride in an ambulance down to Fresno to get treated. I saw him off and drove back home – interestingly coughing hardly at all.
The next day I was much better when I learned I might have a large expenditure in the repair of my car. As I was driving to the mechanic I coughed intensely again! It turned out to be a minor thing and on my way home I hardly coughed at all.
I think this is the first time I had a one to one awareness of the effects of stress on me and my body. I happen to be on the edge of getting better so it was easy to see the back and forth of stress, no stress and its effects.
Stress is a powerful thing and I hope and invite you to pay attention to what stresses you and how you react. You might learn you can modulate your response. You will add years to your life, and you will someday thank yourself for not stressing out.
